The Doris Henderson Newcomers School serves immigrant and refugee students in grades 2-11 who have recently arrived in the US. Focused, grade level instruction is provided by teachers who are dually certified in their content area and in teaching English as a Second Language. All students receive instruction in English, with a strong focus on academic language aligned with their grade level. Art, Music, Physical Education, Technology, English as a Second Language, and Reading Intervention classes are also offered. Our staff is committed to helping students adjust to the American school system and culture. We do this through a series of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, town hall meetings by language group, guided social stories, small group counseling sessions, individual counseling sessions, and parent information sessions. Families are important and welcome partners in the educational process of our students. We include parent orientation as a component of learning more about the American Education System and what it will take to be successful in US schools and beyond.
